Decaying marijuana plants were discovered Monday in three large underground water tanks - converted into a well-organized pot farm - on the SUNY Old Westbury campus, police said.
But the operation had been abandoned years ago, cops said.
"This is very old stuff," said Nassau County Police Lt. Arthur McLoughlin, commanding officer of the 3rd detective squad. "The vegetation was lacking in normal color."
So whoever was growing the pot - and this clearly was not some sort of horticulture project run by the university - is likely long gone.
Well, what did they expect? The state keeps raising the tuition and money doesn't grow on (though does buy, hoho) trees! The best part (kind of makes me proud to be a SUNY alumni) is this:
The tanks were discovered Monday around 8:30 a.m. by a contractor working near Building 19 on the campus' south side, McLoughlin said.
The worker found electrical wires that tapped into the building's power source. He followed the wires' trail, under branches and other vegetation, which led to "a hatch to what appeared to be a room underground, with lighting," McLoughlin said.
That's thinking! Not only were these guys running a pot farm on campus, but they got the university to pay for the electricity! Those who know anything about growing weed (I don't) know that those lamps consume a lot of juice. And I do mean a lot!
