We had a small fire on the first floor of our office building last week. It really was nothing (barely any smoke), but the incident did give me a nice photo op and a reason to hang out outside for an hour instead of working.

Here's one of the photos I took:

These guys do have a very dangerous job - three firefighters died last Sunday - Lt. Curtis Meyran, 46, and Firefighter John Bellew, 37, died when they also jumped from the Tremont building as flames trapped six firefighters on Sunday. and Hours later, Firefighter Richard Sclafani, 37, died when he raced into a burning Brooklyn home looking for trapped children.

Accoding to NY Post, top base salary for a New York city firefighter is $54,048, the average veteran firefighter earned $65,516 (with overtime) last year.

In Sacramento: His eyes welling with tears, Sacramento Fire Chief Julius "Joe" Cherry vowed Tuesday to return his scandal-ridden department to respectability even as Mayor Heather Fargo and two City Council members said that four firefighters should be fired if sex allegations against them are true.

The political leaders warned that they would be closely watching Cherry and City Manager Bob Thomas to ensure that the proper discipline is meted out in this latest department scandal.

Cherry revealed Monday that he had launched an investigation into charges that the four firefighters - three men and a woman - had engaged in group sex in their Hollywood Park station house.

Chivalry dead?

I had some minor car trouble this morning, so I am working from home. Anyway, as I was waiting for the light to turn green I observed an interesting scene.

The photo below is exactly why I have my camera on me at all times.

There's a guy sitting behind the wheel, and... his wife with a shovel (partially blocked by the parking meter, see the larger version of the photo) clearing the parking space. Hah!

Who said chivarly is dead? Look at how patiently he waits while she stops working and tries to keep her hands warm by blowing on them (or maybe she was coughing?). What a sweetie!

Yea and I think he did glare at me. 5x zoom came in handy there.

Bar photo

Those of you who now me personally, know that I've been trying to get into photography for a while now. So, from time to time you guys will have to suffer through my attempts. Here's one that I like:

Since this was an indoor shot in a rather dim environment and the flash was not used (I hate flash and avoid it when I can), the ISO was bumped up to 400, which explains the noise, though the photo still looks decent and printable. The shutter speed was 1/13 of a second and surprisingly I did a good job of holding the camera steady (even after 2 pints of Bass Ale).

I really like how the glasses (close center and to the right) add to the composition.

Snow, snow, snow!

Its coming down pretty hard, here in Brooklyn. I just some shoveled some snow in front of my house, and here's the (semi) lovely view.
